Green pool and algae
Green water means something fell behind: sanitation, circulation, filtration or all three. Cleanup starts with an assessment, not a guess.

In Southwest Florida's heat, a pool can go from clear to green in days, especially after heavy rain or a missed visit.
What you might notice
- Water turned green or yellow-green
- Slippery walls or steps
- Can't see the bottom
- Algae keeps coming back after it clears
Possible causes
Appearance alone doesn't identify the cause. These are the usual possibilities a pro checks:
Sanitation fell behind
Missed visits, rain dilution or heavy use.
Circulation or filtration
Pump run time, a dirty filter or an equipment problem.
Debris and nutrients
Leaves, pollen and runoff feed algae, especially in open-air pools.
Shaded areas
Low-circulation corners and steps are where algae starts.
What you can safely do
- Keep swimmers out until the water is clear and tested
- Remove large floating debris with a skimmer if it's safe to reach
- Don't add chemicals without testing, and never mix pool chemicals
- Take photos for your service provider
How a Uniform pool pro assesses it
We test the water, check circulation and filter condition, and look for equipment problems. Then we explain the cleanup plan and what it depends on. See CDC home pool water testing guidance.
What we do, and what we refer
| Situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| Pool is green, equipment working | Green pool cleanup, then weekly service |
| Pool is green, equipment problem found | Refer to a licensed pool/spa contractor with our observations |
| Algae keeps returning | Review circulation, filtration and service frequency |
You get a written quote before any work outside your plan. See the pool service cost guide.
