Cloudy or milky pool water
Cloudy water has several possible causes. Testing and a look at circulation and filtration tell you which one.

Rain, heavy use, filtration and water balance can all cloud a pool. Clear-looking water isn't automatically sanitary, either: testing is what tells you.
What you might notice
- Water looks hazy or milky
- Cloudiness after heavy rain
- Cloudy after a cleaning or treatment
- Hard to see the bottom
Possible causes
Appearance alone doesn't identify the cause. These are the usual possibilities a pro checks:
Filtration
A dirty or undersized filter, or a short run time.
Water balance
Readings out of range can cause cloudiness.
Rain and runoff
Summer storms dilute and contaminate the water.
Fine debris
Pollen and dust, common in screened pools too.
What you can safely do
- Keep swimmers out if you can't see the bottom clearly
- Note when it started and what happened before (rain, a party, a treatment)
- Don't add chemicals without testing
How a Uniform pool pro assesses it
We test and record the water, check the filter and circulation, and give you next steps in your visit report. See CDC home pool water testing guidance.
What we do, and what we refer
| Situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| Water balance or filtration issue | Corrected as part of service |
| Equipment not circulating properly | Refer to a licensed pool/spa contractor with our observations |
You get a written quote before any work outside your plan. See the pool service cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is cloudy water dangerous?
It can hide hazards and may indicate a sanitation problem. Keep swimmers out until it's assessed.
Why is my pool cloudy after rain?
Rain dilutes the water and washes in debris. Testing after storms helps.
